Florida is one of the most visited places in the world. Millions of people fly in every year for the beaches, the theme parks, the cruises — and maybe to catch a glimpse of Florida Man in his natural habitat.

And before we get started, yes — I can already predict at least one comment saying: “The number one mistake is going to Florida at all.” Very original. Thanks for saving yourself some typing.

For everyone else, here are the Top 10 Mistakes Tourists Make in Florida — the kind that can turn your dream vacation into a sunscreen-scented disaster. Some of these mistakes are funny, some are annoying, and a few can completely wreck your trip. One of them can even ruin your life.

1. Falling for Free Tickets (Timeshare Trap)

Let’s start with the big one. The mistake that has ruined vacations — and in some cases, entire lives.

In Orlando, you’ll see signs advertising “FREE Disney Tickets!” or “FREE Universal Passes!” All you have to do is sit through a quick 90-minute timeshare presentation.

Except it’s never 90 minutes. It’s hours of relentless sales tactics designed to wear you down. Orlando is the timeshare capital of the world, with more than 20% of all timeshares located there. These salespeople are professionals.

They’ll act like your best friend, paint glossy pictures of luxury vacations for pennies on the dollar, and pile on the pressure with guilt trips about “family memories.” There are even stories of salespeople becoming verbally abusive if you don’t budge.

And here’s the catch: people walk out having signed contracts that lock them into thousands of dollars in annual fees forever. Timeshares don’t appreciate like real estate — in fact, they often become worthless the second you sign. Escaping them is nearly impossible.

To be fair, Disney Vacation Club doesn’t have a terrible reputation compared to others, but at the end of the day… it’s still a timeshare.

How to avoid this mistake: If someone offers you free tickets in Florida, smile, say no, and walk away. Because in Florida, “free” usually comes with the world’s most expensive catch.

2. Booking a Sketchy Hotel

You think: “It’s Orlando. Home of Mickey Mouse and Harry Potter. How bad can it be?”

Pretty bad, actually.

Some of the hotels just outside Disney are notoriously run-down. If you’ve ever seen the indie film The Florida Project, you know the vibe. West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway (U.S. 192) is infamous for these kinds of budget motels.

That “minutes from Disney” hotel? Might be 45 minutes away without traffic. That “bargain Miami Beach” room? Could be three miles inland, next to a pawn shop, with paper-thin walls and mysterious stains.

How to avoid this mistake: Research before booking. Use Google Maps, read reviews, and look at guest photos — not just glossy marketing shots. Because nothing kills vacation vibes faster than realizing your “resort” is actually Hotel Nope.

3. Flying in the Same Day as Your Cruise

Florida is the cruise capital of the world, with more than 8 million passengers sailing out of its ports every year.

Yet every week, tourists roll the dice by flying in the morning their ship departs. Delayed flights, lost luggage, traffic jams — it only takes one hiccup, and you’ll be waving goodbye to paradise from the Chili’s at Miami International Airport.

Just recently, a family missed their Carnival cruise in Miami after getting stuck in traffic caused by a highway accident. The ship left on time. They were left behind. And here’s the kicker: no refund.

How to avoid this mistake: Fly in at least one day early. Book a hotel near the port, enjoy some local food, and start your trip relaxed instead of in full panic mode. Because a vacation that begins with mojitos by the pool beats one that begins with a sprint through TSA every single time.

4. Stopping at Scam Gas Stations

If you’re renting a car in Orlando, beware of certain gas stations near the airport. The most infamous is Suncoast Energys, which has been charging jaw-dropping prices for years. We’re talking $6–$8 per gallon when stations across the street are half that.

Tourists in a rush to fill up before returning their rental car get gouged all the time. It’s become so notorious that locals avoid it like the plague.

How to avoid this mistake: Check gas prices on Google Maps before filling up. And remember — the closer you are to the airport, the sketchier the station.

5. Underestimating the Florida Sun

Here’s a fun fact: Orlando sells more aloe vera gel than almost anywhere else in the U.S. Why? Because tourists underestimate the Florida sun every single day.

Cloud cover? Doesn’t matter. A gentle breeze? Doesn’t matter. If you’re outside for more than 20 minutes without sunscreen, you’re already cooking.

Personally, I’m a rash guard guy. I go for full coverage. Do I look like a ninja turtle at the beach? Maybe. But at least I’m not glowing red like a stop sign.

How to avoid this mistake: Bring sunscreen (reef-safe if you’re going in the ocean), reapply often, and consider wearing UPF-rated clothing. Sunburn isn’t just painful — it can ruin the rest of your trip.

6. Ignoring Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June through November, and while direct hits are rare, storms can definitely disrupt travel. Flight cancellations, theme park closures, beach evacuations — it happens every year.

That said, here’s a little secret: if you happen to visit the theme parks the day before a storm is expected, while they’re still open, you’ll probably have the place to yourself. When Hurricane Dorian threatened Florida but never made landfall, I walked onto rides at Hollywood Studios that normally have hour-long waits.

How to avoid this mistake: Buy travel insurance, have a backup plan, and always keep an eye on the forecast. Don’t panic — but don’t ignore the weather either.

7. Swimming in the Wrong Place

Florida has some of the most inviting water in the country. But not all of it is safe.

Freshwater canals, ponds, and lakes? Assume there’s a gator. There’s a saying here: “If the water is wet, there’s probably a gator in it.” And honestly? Many lakes are muddy, mucky, and full of vegetation — not exactly the swimming hole you’re imagining.

Then there’s the amoeba risk. In warm freshwater, there’s a rare but deadly brain-eating amoeba (Naegleria fowleri). It’s extremely rare, but it exists.

In the ocean, the biggest danger isn’t sharks — it’s rip currents. They kill more people in Florida every year than hurricanes and sharks combined. Jellyfish blooms and stingrays also add to the list of hazards.

How to avoid this mistake: Stick to designated swim areas with lifeguards. Shuffle your feet in shallow water to avoid stingrays. And most importantly, don’t be afraid of the beach — Florida’s beaches are incredible, you just have to be smart.

8. Getting Trapped in Rental Car Toll Programs

Here’s the scam: the rental car counter pushes a “convenient” toll pass for $15–$20 per day. But most tourists don’t actually drive through enough tolls to make it worthwhile.

What should be a couple of dollars in tolls can turn into hundreds over the course of a week.

How to avoid this mistake: Skip the overpriced toll program. Use your own SunPass transponder if you have one, or just rely on Toll-By-Plate. The bill will go straight to the rental company, and they’ll pass it on with a small admin fee — usually far less than the daily “convenience” package.

9. Over-Scheduling the Theme Parks

Disney World is 40 square miles — about the size of San Francisco. Universal has multiple theme parks plus a water park. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay covers 335 acres, making it one of the largest zoos/theme parks in the world.

Yet tourists arrive every week saying, “We’ll do it all in three days!”

Here’s reality: you’ll walk 8–12 miles a day. Lines for big rides can stretch over an hour. By Day 2, your feet will hate you, your kids will hate you, and you’ll start questioning why you ever loved Mickey Mouse in the first place.

I’ve seen more than one dad meltdown in 98-degree heat yelling, “We are going to have FUN whether you like it or not!” It’s less “family memories” and more “Bhutan Death March.”

How to avoid this mistake: Prioritize your must-do rides, plan rest days, and accept that you’ll never do it all. The goal is fun, not survival.

10. Feeding the Wildlife

It seems harmless — tossing fries to seagulls on the beach, or trying to get close to a gator for a photo. But in Florida, feeding wildlife is a recipe for disaster.

Seagulls become aggressive, raccoons raid campsites, and gators start associating humans with food — which is dangerous for everyone.

How to avoid this mistake: Admire wildlife from a distance. The only thing worse than explaining a seagull attack scar is explaining it to your insurance agent.

Florida is an amazing place to visit — but it comes with quirks, risks, and plenty of opportunities for rookie mistakes. By avoiding these 10 traps, you’ll have a smoother, safer, and way more enjoyable vacation.
